Repay for Good iPhone app

August 19, 2012 Leave a comment

Here’s another great, simple idea I’d like to file away into a category called, “Why Didn’t I Think of That?”

Repay for Good is an “…iPhone app that enables friends who owe each other small sums of money to pay off their debt through a charitable donation instead.”

Why does it work?

  • Appeals to our altruistic side
  • It works for the same reason casinos use chips instead of cash, because it doesn’t FEEL like you’re using real money, so you’re more likely to spend more or just give it away

Watch the video below to see the app in action:

Why Are Young People Choosing Smartphones Over Cars?

August 12, 2012 Leave a comment

One of the more interesting articles I’ve read over the past week.

Youth culture used to be incredibly tied to car culture. Cars meant both rebelliousness and personal freedom, allowing young people to travel and explore, whether through weekend road trips, racing or 50’s era drive-thrus.

But not anymore.

Gen Y doesn’t need cars for freedom, especially when smartphones allow them to access the entire world at their fingertips. There are 3 hypothesis on why this is happening:

  1. Money is tight and Gen Y has been forced to reevaluate the necessity of major purchases
  2. Young people are driving less
  3. It’s not just happening in the U.S. — this is a global trend: “Having grown up with the Internet, they no longer depend on a car for shopping, entertainment and socializing and prefer to spend their money in other ways.”
